A Ray of Light

V, a Singaporean lady, contacted me this week to ask me what kind of job experienced I used to have. I'm not sure if she can help me in anything. Not that I am not expecting help, I am grateful enough for friendship but you can see things happening once you set your mind to do things.

I read from somewhere the universe will be for or against you if your mind is set. When you decide on a goal hard enough, the magnetic fields around you attract like-minded people or entities into your life. These combined may be able to inspire you and help you achieve your mission one way or another.

Thus if you think you are a jinx and think of it often enough, hard enough, you may get more than you wish for. Self fulfilling prophecy.

I went over to Micky's to get my resume printed for tomorrow's interview. Where did this come from? Alvin's friend. And then one thing leads to another and I'm meeting the MD of the company to have a chat. While we were chatting outside Micky's house, Micky introduced his neighbour to me who happened to be a project manager who specialised in windows and doors construction. He asked for my number and said he will call if there are any known vacancies in relevant roles. Another example of things magically happen. If you want something hard enough and make yourself be there, doing that, the universe will back you up.

Oh before I forget, Micky got a job as a Field Service Engineer after 9 months of grueling search. It is a smashing one, rather well paid and we are very happy for him. I hope future new migrants never give up like Patrick, Micky and (maybe) I. It is pointless to go back to Singapore citing the wanton mee sucks here (that was what V told me someone she knew said)  as the reason if you are unwilling to walk the path every Singaporean migrant before you did.

I did a search on the net about the job. The company advertised a month ago and failed to find their man. I am not surprised. It is a Singapore company and their style of writing the job advertisement makes it apparent. The role I am going for is for 'higher secondary' (not even 'O' levels) as stated and they are paying A$36k for it. No offense but with the suggested remuneration after tax, Albany and I will be begging on Barrack Street after work for a side income.

Mind you, I am not despising any job opportunities. I treat each one with the same respect and I am going to meet the interviewer in my best wear and attitude. It is a valuable experience for me. With luck, I may get an offer. With better luck, the job advertisement may be a misprint. With uber luck, I could get the MD drunk and offer me a decent pay with it.

If luck isn't with me, I get some good experience in interview. If I have to fail some interviews to be good enough and ace one eventually, it is probably better to be sooner than later. Besides, I cannot let Alvin down for sounding a job link for me.

I thank everyone for helping me out all these while. Job or no job, I'm really glad how things turn out so far. The support (online and offline) have been overwhelming. I felt loved. When one feel loved, he can even see the beauty in a pile of shit.

Just look at how I appreciate the ray of light in my ugly workshop. Remember, with hope in your heart, there will be a ray of light in many bad situations you may land yourself in.

  6. Good luck.
Though honestly, A$36k per annum is on the rather low side. But who knows, it may lead to something better.
    Cheers!

  7. One could sense your doubt in the first paragraph. For all you know, that lady could be well connected. So, don't have a one track mind.

    2. Hi asingaporeanson,
I am a Singaporean lady who have been here for 10 years. In Australia, it will be difficult to get a job if you do not have Australia work experience even if you are holding senior position in Singapore. The culture and way of doing things is quite different. So for a start, try your hand in any jobs just so to get work experience to springboard to a better job of your choice in future. A lot of us started that way when we first got here.
From your blog, you sound like a fighter, so you will be fine.
Btw, how is Jen? I hope she is coping well as a young mother, a long way from home. I am living not far from where you live. Like to bring Jen out for coffee sometimes, if she like to.
      I can be contacted at : edu58@live.com.au

      Take care

  8. I'm later than the rest, but the same best wishes to you, my friend, for this coming interview and all necessary ones to come!

I'm a little surprised that A$36k annual is low, considering that it's A$3k monthly converted to S$ way exceeds my target in income search now.
But then, I'm a frog in the well on red-dot here, who only heard from friends in Oz that typically half of income goes into taxes, so I guess we're looking at $1.5k usable at the end (before rebate).

Whatever the case, I'm ignorant and inexperienced in this, and would appreciate anyone who might take the trouble to explain relative incomes over there to me. :-)

And nevertheless, it's good and human to strive for a better good life, so shine on that ray of light, man!
Just a while back, an old friend mentioned that while he's comfortable living there, he had to start searching again, also because he wanted to revive his brain!

My heart goes out to all you seekers.

    2. manual workers tend to earn more than low level office/admin/managers down under.
Over in Sydney, my sis-in-law who has an MBA in accounting is earning much lesser than my bro-in-law who's a delivery man...

      Delete
    3. Peck>> RUBBISH! That can only be true if your sis-in-law is working 3 day a week and the delivery man works 12h a day, 7 days a week or delivers drugs! Seriously, too much of these i heard from my friend who heard from his sis-in-law father cousin.

    4. Thank you for reminding me again about your useful blog post earlier, -asingaporeanson- !
It's interesting to learn something real.

    5. 36k is low because after tax(though it is nowhere near the infamous 50%), it's not quite enough for a single income family. Tat's why I have to look around and give this one a miss

    1. Thank you for the link to the pay chart, -Ahm-!
Look at that jump from Sep 2011 onwards!

Wow, the Education/Training average is beyond A$60k — more than what I was ever 'well paid', gross (before CPF) as a public school teacher almost a decade ago.
Certainly beyond my reach now, at this time.

I'm not thinking about a costly big house and a 'nice' new car.
I'm thinking of a cosy little home, with me trusty broadband laptop, home-cooked meals / cheap takeouts and lots of quiet personal and family time.

  11. Hmmm $36K is way too low. The receptionist at my workplace is already getting $48K.

A handyman can earn about 85K after tax etc...

Anyhow, good luck! It's all part of a learning process!

    1. www.seek.com.au vs jobstreet.com.sg
run thru less than 3 ads each im sure you will understand completely.

    2. I did go compare those 2 websites, and I agree with you, the Australian ads suggest that they view you as a human being with various experiences, while the S'pore ones put up walls of responsibilities and requirements to bar entry.

Shamefully, in my search for suitable, adequate income, I had to get interested in some (local ones) that I saw.
But no worries, I'll probably get yet more walls of silence (only shortlisted … will be … blah blah): after all, who looks up to a part-time, work-from-home guy? ;-P

  14. Consider the option of working in the mining industry. A blue collar worker.. Say someone who drives the big trucks at the mine can make about $100K per annum. But you need to be working in shifts.. Like few weeks or months at the mine and away from family

    1. Alas, it's a bit like China over here. Who you know is probably more important then what you know. If you have contacts that can get me into mining, I'll gladly take it up.
