Scholarships should be based on merit, not nationality: Baey
No words will be minced in my post. PAP for all your wisdom and experience, you guys have fallen short big time in this one. First, on meritocracy:
"Intelligence is a process, not a fixed, gene-determined, thing. This process begins very early on, before we can even really see it, and we therefore often confuse these early, invisible stages with some sort of innate giftedness. Then we test kids and report the results as innate differences — this one is gifted, this one is not. This one has extra promise; that one does not. We send the “gifted” ones to good schools with small class sizes, better-trained teachers, better infrastructure, better relationships with parents, and higher expectations. We send the apparently-unpromising kids to under-funded, teach-to-test schools with minimal expectations.
And then we tell ourselves that we live in a meritocracy."
- Jennifer Senior
The common people doesn't matter anymore
Gone were the days where the Nation, government and people stands at ONE. Where everyone believes in our nation building song "Stand up for Singapore" which emphasize the recognition of everyone's importance. Nowadays, only the elites matter for the nation - under the ugly mask of
M.E.R.I.T.O.C.R.A.C.Y
A challenge to the PAP
I challenge the PAP to conduct an experiment. Remove scholarship from these so call scholars, along with free accommodation and monthly allowances and whatever perks that they receiving - you guys know best.
Get them to earn their living part time while juggling with their studies. Give the benefits removed from them to any ITE student on the street and see who turns out better in 10 years time. Or better - who contributes more to Singapore in the future.
Get them to earn their living part time while juggling with their studies. Give the benefits removed from them to any ITE student on the street and see who turns out better in 10 years time. Or better - who contributes more to Singapore in the future.
I'm all for attractive the best talents globally to play a part and make Singapore a better place. But have the PAP did adequate studies to conclude that these sponsored students can do that? Can the PAP guarantee that these foreign students stay in Singapore instead of returning to their home country to contribute to their countries?
Is it any wonder why we are not putting in effort to uncover the next Sim Wong Woo and placing the attention on areas with unproven yields?
Isn't attracting the best talents about making Singapore an irresistible place to be at, even without these incredulous perks for the foreigners?

The PAP double standard
Is meritocracy an one-off thing? Does an individual needs only to prove himself once or consistently throughout their service to deserve the royal treatment based on meritocracy? If it is the former, the system needs to be scrapped. If it is the latter, at least half the PAP should be sacked.
Look at the failings of government for the last 5 years. Let's not get things ugly by getting me to list them all out. Did the PAP take a hard look at themselves and conclude they are still the best people to run the show? If I may conclude, there are 2 possibilities.
It is either:
1) The PAP practices a double standard in the playing meritocracy game with their countrymen with themselves exempted.
or
2) They have extremely thick skin - even for dogs.
Pick one.

ReplyDeleteMy heart is no longer at SG, and the more I read those MP or PM talk cock, the more I felt I made the right decision to come to Australia. I have lost the "home" feeling in SG, I'm going to build a new home somewhere.
ReplyDeletethomas, what you just said is exactly how i feel. its heartbreaking that Singapore has come to such a state. I used to love watching national day and take pride in being singaporean...not anymore. Thank you PAP for turning your backs on Singaporeans. May the past generations that built singapore haunt you everynight as you enjoy your millions of dollars
DeleteYou bunch of Singaporeans are effin whiners
ReplyDeleteFirst of all,no one invites you to this blog. You are here on your own freewill. If you disagree, just state your disagreement, we are receptive civilized people and are capable of entertaining different point of view.
DeleteYour one liner is neither helpful nor constructive. It is nothing but an empty ranting berate or at best whining in itself.
he did not call us dog hahaha.
Deleteah pooh
troll la. anonymous some more. don't even dare to put down a fake name :)
DeleteMr Baey thanks for visiting my blog
DeleteTo Anon 11:20 PM,
ReplyDeleteYou are effin moron. I like your comment. Just a simple one-liner calling people 'whiners'. It does say a lot about the number of brain cells you have though.
Sorry if you can't process it fast enough.
Pfft.
Kaffein
maybe tomorrow he will say he was misunderstood
ReplyDeleteActually, we should stop trying to reason with this govt. It is deep down NOT interest in our views. Whatever the pappy dogs say is just part and parcel of an elaborate wayang to appear to be engaging us or that they have a genuine take on an issue. It is impossible to conclude otherwise when you see and hear the sort of reasoning and 'arguments' the pappy dogs like this Bey fellow string together in support of their handlers to be publicized by the Stupid Times as some valid quality view point. There are in reality no more than phony, hollow and self serving craps spoken at the behest of their masters and puppet masters.
ReplyDeleteLook at what is happening in the middle east if you ever wonder what can eventually happen what options there are when the common people are push to a tipping point over the brink when enough is enough.
By the way, by mass importing foreigners and turning them into Instant Citizens, the ruling party has already sown the seed of its very own destruction and challenge to its hold on power in the years to come. Such MYOPIC 'leaders' who are in control of the govt are blinded by the short term gleam of silver and gold that these ICs bring to their bottomless coffers and GDP. And we have seen how having huge amounts of lollies in the kitty have tempted them into doing with our hard earned saving in the international casinos of investment banking.
It's like as if it is some selfish, intolerant and self-centred old man's death wish. He cannot take it away with him even if he were able to rise from the grave and therefore he is doing what's best to fulfill his personal desire - he is doing all he can to destroy it before his time comes.
But right thinking Singaporeans should not allow this to happen, should not allow him to get away with such a demonic dastardly act by standing idle by the side while it is happening. Fellow countrymen, look east, look at the middle east for inspiration on how to save ourselves, our families and our country from the work of the devil himself!
I always find it amusing that we get angry with this MP saying this and another MP doing that.
DeletePeople got angry with MBT, WKS, KBW, etc etc
Are these people really their own man and responsible for their own rhetoric and actions? I don't think so.
Being angry with them is like being angry with the ventriloquist's dolls.
I find it hard to become angry with the dolls, whatever their shape or name.
At the same time, it is also hard for me to acknowledge a doll when they perform something spectacular :)
I look forward to the day when we can enjoy a greater variety of shows instead of the same of ventriloquist's act day after day, even if the dolls are changed every so often.
I'm sure one would have noticed the ventriloquist's dolls are rarely, if ever, smart. In fact, they are usually quite wooden on their own :)
DeleteVentriloquist's dolls...LOL..More like Ventriloquist's dummies
DeleteBut the Ventriloquist is himself a puppet with an old Mentor!

ReplyDeleteguys, as the saying goes... do not feed the troll.
"Pick one".
ReplyDeleteWhy can't I pick both?
what i have seen is that once you are a scholar, your path is paved. so you can make mistakes and they will be brushed under the carpet or overlooked. you will still be promoted.
ReplyDeleteif you are Not a scholar, and make the same mistakes as the scholar, you face penalties.
many scholars would not be where they are now if they were treated like ordinary people. perhaps their employers feel they would not be able to withstand real heat. which makes scholars too wimpy for meritocracy.
any scholarship offered in singapore should be Only for singaporeans. meritocracy should only come into the picture when determining which singaporean should get the scholarship.
if a company wants to hire someone from another country, it should offer its sponsorship in that country, not do so in singapore.
can i pick both?
ReplyDeletethe current government is a reason why i am preparing for my daughter to move out from singapore when she grows up.
i feel that the situation is in a kind of mess. the government and opposition both can't make it. so what will happen to our children in the future? i can't imagine.
it is not only the so-called 'can't-make'it' who are migrating. some of my friends, and they are from very well to do families, have also migrated due to concerns for their children's future.
singapore has always been for the elites, and that will never change, unless the governing party is changed. but can the opposition do better? not that i can see, at least not with the current opposition. too few good men..
so what can i do?
maybe one day we will have a FT as a PM? hahahah
The opposition cannot make it. If there are enough credible and capable persons with the opposition, the ruling party will just round them up on national security concerns by the ISD prior to a general election so that the other parties can never win enough to form a government. It has been done before - they called it "Operation Coldstore".

My answer: All of the above.
2016 please mark the correct box! Is it just me or does this Mr Baey bat for the other team? Maybe that's why he's so accommodating towards the dog insult .....pfffffft
ReplyDeleteIn Singapore, meritocracy is taken very seriously. They use it to prove that they, and only they, are imbued with superior genes such that they control both SWFs, lead the government of Singapore and head GLCs and TLCs and govt. depts. and stat boards and whatnots. They use the power they amassed to grant themselves world record salaries to prove that meritocracy works, at least in Singapore.
