Who Is Dis Grace Fu Fooling?

For the benefit of younger Singaporeans, here is a little bit of history.

On the 23 March, 1985 the Straits Times published a report about Mr Lee Kuan Yew, then the PM of Singapore, on how he told parliament why minister's pay had to go up.

Referring to a table, he said:

"… you will see that the best paid are bankers at S$140,000 a month; next, architects, S$125,000; then lawyers, S$116,00; and the lowest-paid are car-dealers, at S$32,000 (the table shows the PM’s salary at S$29,317 a month).
So I could improve my luck by becoming a car-dealer…"
He went on:

"But perhaps for the younger generation, I ought to mention that I do not believe Singapore is wise in demanding of my younger colleagues that same total, absolute dedication to a cause."

Mr Lee Kuan Yew was spot on. The next generation of ministers were in this for money.

Grace Fu will not be the only one among her colleagues with this mentality. Sadly, millions of dollars could not fulfill the standard of living that our Ministers demand. Did these ministers, paid by tax from the citizens they are serving, think what kind of standard of living these citizens are subjected to in comparison?

"Pay as not a key factor?" Nah Grace, who are you fibbing to?

".. harder for anyone considering political office"? Look no further than Mr Chen Show Mao. He's as qualified as any of you and willing to serve for a fraction of what your colleagues and yourself demanded. More of such able men will step forward to prove Mr Lee Kuan Yew wrong. Tell all your colleagues who are not interested to pack up.

We'll see you to the door in 2016.

  1. I beg to differ.

With the pay cut I see a 5% swing back to PAP.

If LHL, Tharman, Lily, Halimah and TCH were to contest Aljunied in 2016, they'll win it back and it'll be 86:1.

Those who give up liberty for security deserve neither.

No need to argue because you know I'm right. Otherwise why would you have left?

  3. 5% swing back! Pls lah dont make my toes laugh! If WP did not capture Alj GRC u think they would adjust their salary? After adjustments, their pay still highest in the world. So let me ask - Was their pay not obscenely high then?

Yes. More Chen SM clones will come forward by next GE where pay is not on their top list of priority. No point arguing here. Just wait for 2016 to see for ourselves!

  4. To CK,

I be glad if PAP do that, cos they will lose AMK, Jurong, Punggol and TP. All for a single GRC.
    wise tactical move

  7. In 2016 I hope the PAP pay cut is 100%! Mark the X in the right box!!!! I dun like this Grace Fu if PSA is so lucrative, she can jolly well go back there and watch her toenails grow!

  8. There! Straight from the horse's mouth: "If the balance is tilted further..........make it harder for anyone considering political office."

So now we know the real motivation of these ministars!!

  9. To Gintai and everyone else.

We're talking about Sinkees here. A sorry from the PM prevented the Opposition from winning a possible 4 GRCs - instead the Opposition won just the one.

With this pay cut a lot of Sinkees probably had orgasms. It might even be a swing of 10%!

Think about it. For all the whining and purported hardships the PAP still won 60% of the vote. That is a TREMENDOUSLY GOOD RESULT. The PMs of Australia, NZ, Britain and even Obama will give their left nut to get that kind of result in an election.

  10. Can one give up security for liberty? Security is part of liberty. If not how we to go about freely to different parts of the island to shop and eat.

It would be wonderful if more Chen Show Maos can step up. The only fear is we might not have many of him.

but security and liberty is not mutually exclusive.. Why are we assuming we will be free if the pap falls or we will lose security if the opposition takes power?

  12. When a person submits to the demand of oppressor, he or she may postpone some harsher treatment from the oppressor.

But by doing so the person clearly displays to the oppressor his lack of determination to fight for his liberty. This makes him or her the favourite choice of the oppressor for further oppression in future.

As a result in the long run the person gets neither liberty nor safety.

  13. CK: in the long run everyone dies. That's the same reason why the majority prefers a status quo

  14. So what kind of living standards has Grace Fu suffered. Can she elaborate further? Besides, her joining of politics was pulled-string. No effort required on her part and she has not provened herself to be capable. She might not even make that kind of revised salary in private sector. This minister all marked themselves too high to the extend their skin look as thick as elephant.

  15. This is the type of person we get when salary is high. Even after pay cut, her salary is still higher than any ministers and presidents around the globe.

Talk about privacy and life quality. How about Obama? His pay is much lower than hers, don't tell me living cost is lower in US or their top100 earns less than our top100 here. He cannot walk freely on the street w/o bodyguards. Every action and words are seen and heard by billions. 1 word can cause world stock market to go up/down, affects world economy. He needs to face the WORLD (billions of people) and not just a TINY COUNTRY (5.18 million).

And this Graces thinks she make big sacrifices.

  17. asingaporean: Haha, yes. In the long run people die. In the short run though they moan and bitch and whine and complain. And that's no way to live life.

  18. @DarkMind: My email is asingaporeanson@gmail.com

@CK: brother, it's not healthy to be awake at this time, if you are in Singapore time zone. I've no choice because I just came back from work, letting my hair (what's left of it) dry. heh heh

Moaning and whining does not necessarily mean it's bad. Having a laugh through it each time is the way to do it :)

  19. asingaporeanson: Thanks for your concern bro, but I'm a few hours ahead of you. :) I have been following your blog for a while now, as it's a story I'm familiar with!

The kind of moaning and whining Sinkees do is bad. The pek cek feeling, the feeling of impotency is terrible. I'm not sure many of them get to laugh even once a day.

You and me, we're lucky. And I give thanks everyday.

  20. @CK: You're not living in sg. Wonder how you found this blog then? I'm whine and moan as much as other singaporeans, as you can see in the blog. it's painful to read i know, i'll try to write 'positive' stuffs in future.

that reminds me... i've yet to explain about my 'negativity'..

    ReplyDelete
  21. I believe I came to your blog via Singapore Daily.

Oh, everybody whines and moans, regardless of race and nationality. But there are some that choose to do something about it, and some that don't and give plenty of excuses about why they don't. I don't tend to respect those people and try my best to stay away from them.

This is your blog, you write whatever you want mate!

Your negativity is perhaps due to stress. In the last few months alone you have uprooted yourself and your wife from a familiar place with plenty of support, to pretty much fending for yourself. Finding a job, making ends meet, impending fatherhood for the first time, and now putting up with a crappy MIL!

Plenty of people are rooting for you and Jen and Albany. At least I am. :)

  22. hi CK,

i've always been known as 'negative' throughout my life. It's not only this period of time. I was always upset when being told that in the past but i've grown to understand why i think n behave this way. There is a half constructed post 100 days ago about this. I nv get to finish it because there was too much to say and i can't decide what to leave out

  23. Negative = pessimist?
Negative = always bringing people down?
    Negative = cynical?

Why do you think your negativity is a problem?

    CK

    ReplyDelete
  24. @CK: it's not a problem for me. negativity is more than that. I'll try to finish that post one of these days

  27. it's interesting to see when pay-cutting issue inviting so many jumpy pap's member rush to the defence. how ironic was that when the local replaced by FT, they accuse the latter demands higher pay?
some of them even chided that no one go into the politic becoz of passion, my view is,since they are top talents, if no passion involves in their jobs why not pack and leave? dont they all the talents sg market desperately needed? if all of them flood into private sector we might not need so much FT.also, can the sg market afford to pay all of them the pay they get in govt?
if you were a head of the interviewer would you hire an employee who has absolutely no passion in the job he is about to get?
